Spring Break Theater Camp is right around the corner

This year’s camp is going to be held over Spring Break — April 16 though 20.  The final performance of camp will be at the Jasper ArtFest on April 21 on Main Street.  The deadline to register is April 6 and you may register by filling out the form in the Downloadable Forms section.  Click here to get the form.  Cost for the camp is $75 per child and the ages are 3rd through 9th grade.  Camp hours will be from 9AM till noon every day, at the Tater Patch Players Theater at 95 Philadelphia Lane.   The theme this year is the circus, and the kids will learn valuable tips about performing and entertaining the public, while having a great time.

Theater teaches children important values they can use in school and life. Public speaking can be a huge problem for someone too shy or who lacks confidence. Being part of the theater can help a child to move past shyness develop self-confidence. Theater brings out a child’s creativity in a way that no sport can. This newly discovered creativity can help improve a child’s academic skills by teaching her to open up her mind. Being part of a theater program is a great way to teach a child about commitment. When a child is involved in the production of a play, he’ll realize that there are many others who are depending on him.  Theater requires a lot of dedication. A child must learn  lines and memorize stage blocking. Dedication is an important skill that is always used in the real world. Children learn this the moment they participate in a play production.

But above all, theater is FUN!!  In addition to the play, your child will participate in craft activities, games, have a nutritious snack, and have fun with friends (and meet some new ones).  The circus was picked as this year’s theme because the Big Top is a magical place for kids of all ages.  The kids will learn about stage movement and presentation, theatrical makeup and costume, the magic of behind-the-scenes, and much more.  Each will play a part in the camp’s play and will perform for the parents on Friday.  Then they will take their production to the streets of Jasper and be a part of the second annual ArtFest!

The $75 cost is for 15 hours of camp plus the show at ArtFest.  If, for any reason, you need a partial scholarship, please send an email to Camp Director Crystal Merrill at TaterPatchParty@gmail.com.  We want all the kids in Pickens County to have the opportunity to participate in live theater.  This summer’s main stage production of Gypsy involves a number of children in the first act of the show, and we’d like them to consider auditioning for that on April 22 or 23, also.  Please contact the Players at the contact number or email on the front page of the website for more information on Gypsy.
